Some guns just don't need a high percent of collector's case color, hang tags or work orders - they are just the best shooting machines in the world. These are not for the collector!

If you want a best Purdey, according to my favorite Brit gunsmith, then you want one with a serial no. over 25,000. That said, an earlier one is sheer beauty.

I don't care what anyone says, all Purdey purchasers are gun collectors and investors because no Purdey shoots ten or twenty thousand dollars better than a well stocked VH Parker. I no more want a trashed out or poorly refinished Purdey than I would want the same thing in a Parker. Regardless of the incorrect opinion of some to the contrary, a good, lightly used, original Purdey sells for buckets more money than a many times refreshed one.

Some have got so wrapped-up into collecting, and vanity grade one-up-manship chase, that they forgotten all about the dynamics of the true gamegun. Some, don't even have mud on their favorite boots.

Ken,
Go for it and enjoy this piece of history as you create your own in the upland game fields or grouse woods. Take care to pass this on as a legacy to someonoe who equally enjoys great hunting and fine firearms. Good luck and good hunting!

8b - a well stocked, plainly finished Birmingham boxlock will shoot just as well as the VH and a well stocked French/German/Belgian "guild" boxlock will do it for even less. Some people know and understand this and others don't. So, if you want to shoot a Parker, you will pay more than if you shot a "guild"/Burmmie BL/Fox SW/Elsie and less than if you shot a Purdey. Eight fold is a big chunk to pay for top brand value vs bottom BV. But, that is what the market has currently decided.

25,000? That's around 1935!
I loved to know why your 'smith thinks that, too
