I am experimenting with faux finishing a plain stock for the fun of it now a real expensive piece of wood. I am a hobby artist and feel like I can copy wood from photo's to add some graining but I am not sure how to go about it. I am an oil painter and have spent a little time creating some grain . CAN ANYONE HELP ? Monty

Monty, there's no doubt a couple of our contributors here could share their technique with you. However we must remember that this is a livelyhood for them, and not really available for the asking. Some of our gun-smiths share knowledge freely, but I understand it completely when they remain silent. Good Luck!...Geo

I too would like to know how it's done. I certainly don't want to start another business doing this. I also wanted to know about the specifics of case hardening, Damascus barrel construction, re-soldering loose ribs, etc. but have no aspirations of doing these for a living, so I'm not going to be a threat to their business. I'd just like to know how it's done.

Find a good book on finishing and read the Faux Grain chapters. Then any comments and hints here will make a lot more sense. Jus' saying.
Most wood, however plain can be enhanced. But tools, material, and techniques require a bit of homework. Not technically horrific & formidable, but the basic vocabulary of the art.

Hi Jewler.
To begin your quest try this web site fauxwoodgraining.com it has lots of basic info on the how to get started and the tools used, but it is not specifically for gun stocks though it will be a good place for you to start.
