There is a commercial compound made for this which the longrifle building guys use. Made by Birchwood Casey and called brass black. You might try Track of the Wolf as they list it.

birch wood casey used to sell a brass blacking solution. it worked great for me.
keep it simple and keep it safe...

If you can't find the Birchwood product, call a leaded glass shop or supplier. They have potions for blackening various types of came.

Cold Blue (for steel) will darken most brass alloys. Scrub or dissolve any lacquer coating off the brass first of course.
You can buy 'Brass Black',,but most Cold Blues works fine for age darkening brass and most everyone has a bottle of the brew around somewhere.
The first damp cleaning patch w/BP fouling on it wiped over the brass will darken it in a matter of seconds also.
