I came across the following double in Afghanistan recently. I am an Advisor to a paramilitary police unit. I was carrying a Mossberg 500 riot gun for a while since I wasn�t issued an M4 until just this last week. So, I used what I could get my hands on. The Afghans were intrigued by the fact that I was carrying a "bird gun". They actually wanted me to shoot some doves with it. They would point at my Mossberg and say "Birds, Birds". I had a bit of a hard time explaining to them that "no, it was for people�; I have 00 buck loads in it. They didn�t want to grasp the 9 pellet concept.

So one of the guys disappears for a bit and comes back and proudly shows me his double; a 12 ga. he told me (through my terp) that he hunts birds with it.
It is not exactly a "Best Quality" double. No makers name but I will assume eastern European origin unless someone can say otherwise. I was able to pull the barrels and check the flats. No British proofs. Needless to say, the bores were rough and it was off face and the barrels wobbled on the action. He had a few shells for it of undetermined origin. I did ascertain that I could buy birdshot loads in Kunduz for about $10.00 US per box, pretty pricey if you ask me.
Anyway, it�s a double and therefore qualifies to be spoken of on the site.

From your pictures it appears of German or Belgium origin or at least a copy...?...

Looks very non-traditional to me. Most probably not west European.
Could be sort of local (in the 2000km radius sense of local) or maybe Russian?
The distance between the lever axis and the breech is very long and the 2 screws on the bottom are certainly not A&D typical.

It could have been made in one of the dirt floor gunshops of Pakistan, where they can make about any gun, rifle, revolver or pistol that has ever been made, using crude tools and files.

Cool pictures. I once had a Holland & Holland 16-bore Royal Deluxe with grotesques and mythical beasts engraved on it, which belonged to an Afghani princess.

As a matter of fact look how the left and right balls are different...
Seems to be a bazaar made gun!
My brother gave me a hunting flintlock black powder fowler made in Burkina Faso circa 1990. The barrel is supposed to be a steering column from a Citroen. Quite impressive with almost no tools available (maybe a fire, a knife, a hammer and a file). Everything is hand made including the pins. I also have a similar technology pistol and the black powder horn (including the locally made black powder).
The typically used projectiles are nails, rocks and pebbles.
That solves the ammunition procurement problem...
