Hello all. Several weeks back I bought some of these hulls with the intention of using them in my Remington 1894. I loaded them with 3 drams of Goex and 1 1/8 oz of lead #8 to use on the trap field. When it came time to use them, I discovered that something was amiss as they got horribly stuck in the chamber and the gun wouldn't close on them. I had to get them out by tapping on the back end of the ejector shaft. I measured the diameter of the hulls and compared them to the Federal hulls I bought from RST. The brass hulls were .020" larger than the RST hulls which were in themselves a snug fit.

So my question(s) for the group is twofold, 1) have any of you folks used these shells and did you experience the same issue? and 2) does anybody know/have the chamber dimensions for 10ga so that I may compare them to my hulls?

Thanks,
Mergus

Yes, I've bought about 3 dozen of their hulls and they fit my Parkers perfectly. I talked to the guys there when I bought mine, and it was explained to me that these hulls were designed around chambers of early Parker hammer guns, which MIGHT be different from other guns of the same era. I guess they had a bit of feed back of similar chambering problems, but if I remember correctly it was with English guns, which also had tighter chambers than Parkers.

After I got my hulls I measured them to compare them with the SAAMI standards that are available online. The hulls all fell withing the tolerances specified in the SAAMI print, but they were on the high side.

So yes, they fit my Parker guns (which they were designed to do) I unfortunately don't have other 10 gauge guns to try them in.

I suppose if they got enough feedback, they might consider making hulls of a smaller diameter to fit other makes of guns.

According to COTW, base diameter is .850, rim diameter is .925.

I load Alcan All Brass hulls for my 10 gauge guns and have made a sizing die for them. I also use a MEC SuperSizer in 10 gauge as needed.

There is a visible difference in size between the 10A and 10B shells. The 10A brass shell is the same size as our modern 10 gauge. The 10B was much smaller in diameter. I didn't think that the 10B was still being utilized as late as 1894.

I had sticking problems and found the hull was slightly too long and was jamming in the forcing cone. Shortened them about .025 and problem solved. Also, the raised diamond on the base of the hull had enough additional thickness that on a couple of guns--one a Parker and the other a early English gun--they wouldn't close. Lathe turned the diamond off and they now work perfectly. Oh, I also reduced the diameter of the rims .015, they were a little too wide in my Brit gun.

These hulls are very well built and I recommend them. They are lathe turned and have quite thin walls so be sure to use 9 gauge wads for loading. Circle Fly Wads has everything you'll need.

When I talked to RMC about brass hulls for my Brit 10 bore, he strongly recommended sending him chamber casts first, as there is considerable variability.

Joe,

I have Alcan 10 gauge brass that I need to have shortened. Do you have any suggestions as to how/where to have that done?

I have no tools for this type of thing.

ROMAC
How many brass hulls do you need shortened?
Which of the Alcan hulls do you have?
They made two lengths.
What final length do you wish?

Gentleman, thank you all for the feedback. I can see where a chamber cast would be a good idea. I will pursue that course of action in order to establish an idea of what to do next.

Thanks again,
Mergus

ROMAC, anyone with a lathe should be able to do it for you. Failing that I'd be more than happy to shorten them for you--no charge.
