I have hunted white-tailed ptarmigan a half dozen different times.
The best advice I can give, is to hire a guide for 2 days.
Barring that, then "Hunt high, sleep low." The higher your VO2 max, the better off you'll be. I live at 600, so anything above 10k is an issue for me.
It's efficient to use a guide. It's safer too. Probably will be an elk outfitter that has seen a couple broods while on scouting excursions.
Remember, they live in the scree, and they eat willow buds. They are well camouflaged, and tend to fly downhill.
Photographically, close your lens 2 f-stops. Drink much water. Be prepared for storms and lightning. I carry an elb. Wear sunscreen.
Tip: Dramamine helps with nausea and vertigo.
The white-tailed ptarmigan is the only ptarmigan in the lower 48. Makes id easy.
The Uinta's are appealing because they open 2-3 days earlier than Colorado.
The scenery is as good as it gets bird hunting.
