Looks more like a scope safety for a Japanese Arisaka(?). Mike

Ok, so what is the mystery part? It is a Paul Jaeger safety for a Mauser 98 Here are pictures of the part in question, Had I not owned one of the Jaeger catalog's, I would never have known what this was. I've seen these safeties on less than a handful of rifles over the years.

I know of a 1903-A4 Sporter with a similar safety. The only one I've seen.

Thanks Igorrock, and Ken, I think with a bit of machining, this safety would work on an 1903 bolt.

Fred, Thank you for posting the Jaeger catalogue pages of their scope safety. I have this safety on a 1903 Springfield bolt sleeve but have been in the dark as to its origin - until I saw your posting. Does the company list the 03 as a rifle for which they make scope safeties? Gary

Hi Gary,
The catalog that I have, which is undated, only lists a safety for the Mauser, the lever on the safety I bought is identical to yours. My safety is unmarked, so I can't conclude that it is a Jaeger, but given the resemblance and the wide variation between Jaeger sidemounts, it would not surprise me that it was. Perhaps, someone out there has other Jaeger catalogs and can contribute.
Fred
