Raimey, the 2 telltales signs: -The lock holding pin is in the middle of the sideplate, which is the wrong location for a sidelock which would have 2 pins anyway - As somebody else said, there are 2 pins on the action bottom. Sidelocks only have one. This is not 100% as some craftsmen went through the effort of hiding the 2nd pin with a slide, but that's quite rare. Additionally, the "sidelock" pin placement looks off to me. Best regards, WC-

I'm in the "hard to tell but definitely questionable" category when it comes to SLE vs BLE. I've seen plenty of sideplated Belgian boxlocks, but most of them don't go to all the trouble with the fake pins etc to give the appearance of a sidelock.
The guns do have 30" barrels. And at least on this side of the pond, 1 1/8 oz loads were available for short-chambered 16's. I've also seen and shot a Bernardelli 20ga hammergun set up for live birds, so while anything but a 12 is certainly less common for pigeons, not impossible.

I too believe this is a sideplated gun, Note the location of the screw in the middle of the lefthand plate, and the end of it showing on the righthand plate. This location would seem to block the swing of a hammer.I too would like to see the back side if the plates. Mike

To me, the plate on the bottom of the action screams "Box lock"
Dumb, but learning...Prof Em, BSc(ME), CAE (FYI)

That small upright figure over the P.V. is that a maker's mark? For some reason I seem to remember that small mark. With all of those pins, a side plated boxlock, come on.

Only one thing can resolve this argument - and I don't mean the vodka and juice mix

That's right, Thanks Larry. I think the only way to find out who built that gun is to take the side 'plates' off the gun, maybe a maker's mark inside. Anyway, if that's a Belgium 'Guild' gun or should I say, "In the trade gun" that is one high grade "Guild"

I think like WC the location of the screw holding the locks is not on the right place. I remember that Ronge make identical guns without his name on it for retailers. There is of course a chance to find the maker when taken the lockplates out. The 2 screws on the bottom plate is also an indication that it is not a sidelock. Marc.
