Before I got sick I was corresponding with a new collector of pre-war sporting rifles. He wanted to start with locating the most hard to find or what one might call the holy-grail in pre-war bolt guns. he asked what rifle that would be.

I think that this might be different for each person, what say you, what do you consider the top rifle. No right or wrong answer just opinions among friends.

Hi Mike,
Hope your healing well & feeling better. My last to join the ranks was a 1932 Mauser type B Kurz, single square bridge, with double set trigger in it chambered in 250-3000 & is unmolested & all original, doesn't get much better than this!

It's way out of my range, but I vote for a H&H Royal grade double rifle, preferably in .375 Flanged Mag.

I would guess that bolt guns made by individuals or small companies are the root of the question. Maybe not. My vote is for a classic Springfield made by a top individual maker, and engraved by Rudolph Kornbrath. A friend has a Neidner Mauser target/sporter engraved by Kornbrath. I haven't seen in for a few years, but it would qualify as "pretty hard to find". Other than my Oberlies guns, it is about the nicest rifle I have seen. The weak point in Oberlies rifles is that so few are engraved.

That would be correct, no one gets in touch with me to ask about English double rifles ;-).

Glad to see you back Micheal, never miss one of your posts.
Only because I have one, I think the "Holy Grail" of the bolt action rifles are the pre WW1 Commercial Mausers used as sniper rifles at the beginning of that conflict. Not only the guns but the provenance attached to them is IMHO quite outstanding.
As far as is known only 3 out of 4600 have thus far surfaced. --- John
