guys: it has been my experience with antique guns, that it is about condition. this one has condition. weather the barrels are original length or not is trivial. the bidding, which reflects the value of this item is based on its pristine condition.

But the bids essentially stopped after the seller added a note that the barrels had been cut. The seller says in that note that he won't try to hold the high bidder to buying the gun because of the late disclosure.
A gun with cut barrels is by definition not in pristine condition, no matter the condition of the rest of the gun.

mike: what you say is generally true for modern guns. however, when it comes to antiques, it has been my experience that the overall original condition of an item is the most important factor. if one had to choose between two antique guns of the same model and condition, then obviously the one that is unquestionably all original would be the more desirable...as to the barrel length on the Remington in question, no one really knows for sure if the barrels are original length or not. and there is no way to really tell for sure. however, if the barrels are in fact original 26" length, that would be very unusual for a gun this old.

Unless you see the gun in front of you, and know what to look for, who's to say the whole gun hasn't been restored? If indeed Remington built a special order 26" barrel gun they would not have left a space between the barrels - it's been cut. I own too many Remington SxS's and have never seen a space between the barrels. Paul

mike: what you say is generally true for modern guns. however, when it comes to antiques, it has been my experience that the overall original condition of an item is the most important factor. An antique double gun with cut barrels is severely discounted for those cut barrels. If the rest of the antique double gun is all original finishes in high condition it is still severely discounted by the market for the cut barrels. ...as to the barrel length on the Remington in question, no one really knows for sure if the barrels are original length or not.ery unusual for a gun this old. We believe we do know that they were cut. There were numerous reasons given in this thread as to why we beilieve that. If they are not cut there is no factory letter to prove that. So the market will always view them as "cut" because that is exactly what the appear to be. The market will always discount the gun substantially because the market will always perceive this gun as having cut barrels.

it amuses me that there are so many know it alls here. in fact we all know what we chose to know. why not just acknowledge that it is at least a classic antique sxs hammer gun in wonderful appearing condition and just leave it at that?

Because, to those who know, it is NOT in "wonderful appearing condition". The barrels are cut. Why don't those who do NOT know just be quiet? SRH
