Hi John and Mike,
I thought I had better start a new thread.
I telephoned my friend in England this morning (morning here but the previous evening over there and I just caught him before he went to bed) and he still has this rifle
It is a commercial 98 Mauser and shoots the 312 bullet not the 323 and and the brass plate on the butt is not round as I thought but he thinks oblong and from memory he thinks it says this.
Standard trigger and without express sights.
He said he would get it out and have a look at it in the morning and send me a photo and all the details, I think by this he means by post.
In the meantime how about you two guys posting a photo of your rifles here.
Regards, Roly.

Roly,
I haven't figured out the photo posting deal yet. When I find time, I may email some to Raimey and ask him to post them for me.Axel Eichendorff wrote a nice article about these rifles in "WAIDMANNSHEIL", a German Gun Collectors Assn. publication. Reprints should be avaliable from the "home office". It would be a little cheaper if you joined.
Mike

Roly; There were pics. of my rifle and I believe Mikes on July 09, 2012 by me under Commercial Militarized Sporting Mauser. That is a good article Mike refers to.
That plaque, as far as I can tell, was about the same size and shape as a playing card. I'd would like to see a close up of that if possible and a copy of that letter for my album.
I have pics of the 3 and could Email them to you - PM your Email addy if you wish. --- John

As soon as I get more information I will post it here.
I was with my friend when he was offered this rifle by a club member who was selling it for a deceased relations estate and would have liked it for myself as an interesting rifle from the first world war but of course you do not gazump a friend or I think anybody else for that matter. This was as I said in my post on the other thread around forty years ago and the rifle was to the best of my memory all original including a letter of provenance.
It still seems incredible to me that only so few have come to light although I suppose they are out there somewhere and it was only when I saw your post saying that only three have turned up to date that I thought of this rifle.
Of course forty years ago classic rifles were not fetching much and I remember I once traded a long barreled S & W 44 mag which were in short supply at the time along with fifty pounds for a 350 Rigby. Now long gone as I don't keep anything these days unless I use it and that 350 was not user friendly.
Regards, Roly.

Der Waffenschmeid might be a tad more accurate, Mon Ami-- either way, that is one of the best and well resourced gun collectors gruppen you could ever ask for-- Prosit!!

Those who actually are members of The German Gun Collectors Association understand that there are two different publications, "Der Waffenschmied" and "Waidmannsheil."

Received these photo's in the post today from England and the problems I had trying to post it here and for some reason or other some of the photo's have ended up pointing upwards and not like the originals.
Mauser 98 Cal. 8/57 small bullet Dia 318 not 323.
Retailed by Walter Uhlig. Halle A/S this is on the barrel.
Four digit No. puts it in 1902/3 as per Mauser book.
Action and lower metal all engraved.
Regards, Roly.
