Tough to judge without the barrels in hand, but many older guns intended for roll crimps and fibre wads have very abrupt forcing cones. I'll take a look at a couple of Ideals on hand.

Rockie, for me it wasn't so much the abruptness of the forcing cones as their roughness or lack of polishing. Perhaps they didn't know the affect on patterns, or that it added too much to manufacturing costs.
Again, would be interesting to look at some top drawer guns to compare.
