I would like to give my Nephew who is stationed at Camp Pendelton a NID before his fourth deployment in a couple of months A local FFL wants $90.00 to transfer. This seems a little steep. Anyone near Riverside know a place I can transfer the gun from my C&R to him

You DO NOT NEED TO SHIP FROM AN FFL, just to an FFL. As a private party, just have him pick a local FFL that will receive a gun from a private party (completely legal), and then you ship the gun to that FFL. The Shootist in Murrieta will receive it, but that's maybe 30 miles from Riverside. Pendelton is a lot closer to San Marcos and San Diego and Oceanside than it is to Riverside. If you go north from Pendelton, you are in Orange County, and there should be a bunch of FFLs there who will receive it. Sites like GunBroker usually have a list of FFLs by zip code or city that can handle long distance transfers.

This is why I don't have a very high opinion of many FFL holders. It is NOT that I don't think they should be able to charge what they want as it's still a free Country to the best of my knowledge.
My quarrel is that they will not tell someone the facts which is what Replacement posted above. This is IMO a form of thievery no matter which way you cut it.
As an aside:Your NID could be legally shipped to another C&R licensee as well.
Jim
As an additional point:
I managed to pick up an L C Smith while on vacation in Florida earlier this year. As a C&R licensee I shipped it USPS to myself in Arizona. I did this because it was cheaper then buying a hard case and paying the extra airline fees.

I think by local he means local to Riverside. It's the guy in CA who wants the 90 bucks.

If he is talking about $90 on the receiving end, that's pretty reasonable around Riverside/Los Angeles/Orange counties, for a gun coming from out of state. I did a couple of guns to Riverside County about two years ago and the best deal I could find was $85. In L.A. County, the going rate is about $135+ for out-of-state guns, unless you have a friend who is an FFL. Maybe the PX at Pendelton could do the transfer?

If OP is the C&R holder, he could try Faith Armory in Temecula. They will not accept guns from private parties (their choice, although wrong) but they may accept from a C&R. Both Faith and The Shootist are between Riverside and Pendelton, near the I-15.

I believe the poster above is quite clear that he's talking about the shipping end. If the $90 includes the shipping charges, which I doubt, it would be reasonable. I got screwed out of a couple of collectible pistols a few years ago by a B.S- ing FFL holder so I have had 1st hand experience with dealing with crooks like that.

I am not defending the ffl. But the reason most ffls require the gun to come from an ffl is if during the inspection the receiver doesn't want the gun. It is illegal to return it to the owner. It must go back to an ffl. I am an ffl and have discussed it during my audits.
By the way. Personally I will accept a gun from an owner as long as everyone know the rules if it need to be returned

Sorry about the confusion I am a C&R FFL holder in VA. I am looking for a cheaper commercial FFL holder in CA near Camp Pendelton to receive the shotgun and make the transfer.
I checked with the MCPX in Pendelton first as the one here in Norfolk does this service. The one in Pendelton cant do it. Faith Armory is the one I found on Gunbroker and they charge $90.00 I guess that things are just more expensive out there.
around here it averages 25 to 50 bucks. Just trying to do things correctly. Thanks for any help

FFLs here routinely charge these amounts. From what I have read, the fee is not intended to be this high. But the law is mealymouthed and the dealers charge whatever they want. I have a dealer I use that charges $50. But he's in Long Beach.
