I shot a couple rounds of clays this evening with a newish hammergun. During the shooting I noticed a burning smell. The smell was my right firing pin piercing the primers, 4 out of 25 shells. A jewlers glass showed both firing pins to be a little jagged on the end. I used a little emery paper to round and polish them to what I think they should look like.
Now that the pin tips had the heat of a pierced primer burn them do the need retempered ?

No. The pin would have been fully hardened, not just surface hardened--if it was hardened at all

It worked. I shot about 50 rounds through the right barrel this evening. There were no pierced primers. The dents in the primers looked rounded and little more shallow, as they should.
