By way of illustration: A Bruchet produced R15, engraved in Rosace: Compare it to the 20 gauge R15 gun imported by James Wayne and for sale on Guns International. Although they are both R15 grade guns, they are not even close in quality. They shouldn't sell for anywhere near the same price, either, no matter what the dealer tells you.

Ted took a lot of time to type all that.
It would be nice to archive or pin the information for future reference.

The caveat that this is opinion or the considered judgement of one guy with actual experience is hardly necessary. Everything here is just that anyway.

Thanks Ted. You never know what gun might come down the road, and information is always good.

Well, it is my opinion, but, it was FREE! Further, because I still wheel and deal a little bit, I didn't tell you everything. Caveat emptor, or, whatever. Best, Ted

That was a well reasoned and explained break down on the facts. Thanks for doing it. Just as you need to watch when guns were produced in GB and Spain you need to think about France and the economic struggles in post war era. Your time line and notes about how grades are often blurred or even completely misunderstood should give any would be buyer reason to dig into what the gun is and what is its true value.
Quality is sometimes hard to recognize and it is very easy to convince yourself that your purchase is a better value than it is. I think it is human nature to think that I just made a good buy even when there are few facts to support it. And having the seller tell you that you just got a steal is not a fact.

Hello Ted, To further your example, Halifaxes are usually referred to as "plain Jane". Here is a photo of mine: Best regards, JC

That gun has had a very interesting history, I'm sure, JC. I wonder how many guns were imported from France, to South America? I wouldn't think many.
Best,
Ted
