This should give you an idea how it works.



When the hoop is formed it is not a pure half-moon shape, rather, it has a recess that allows some clearance for the leather sling itself. The sling in the first picture has not been fitted to a gun just yet, the second photo shows an old sling I have here at the place. The strap itself is what tensions the unit to the barrels, and as time goes by, it actually shapes itself to the individual gun, which allows for some movement back and forth. I prefer that to a fixed swivel as the guns weight can be more comfortably distributed when wearing different clothing, or actually carrying something in my hands, and having the gun slung as well. I don't even notice the sling when I'm shooting, because the top of the hoop isn't near the rib of the gun. The sling on my R10 has a buckle in the middle, which, allows for a bit more adjustment. If I were as fat as jOe is (did you ever see the picture he put up of himself, since removed, 525 lbs, minimum) I would let it out to the maximum, but, I use it at a tighter setting.

Anyone who bad mouths it, without having tried one, is pretty dense. They work very well. The bad news is, I did just hear from Geoffroy today, and he is sold out.

Thanks for all the replies and information. Lots of neat stuff out there. Still researching the permanent installation of the traditional sling swivels.

As several said, I really like having a sling on my shotgun. It is especially handy when watering the dogs or messing with their boots or taking pictures of my shooting student Joe Wood missing birds.

Ted's sling is good for those who don't want a permanent alteration or don't want to reblue after soldering. Wonder how much it costs? I prefer soldered front sling swivels, as I don't trust screws there to stay tight or hold up to wear. Only have one long gun without a sling, a Browning auto .22--may have to alter that some day. I'm just too lazy to carry port arms all the time, though I did with a 5 1/2 pound Greener once upon a time. Steve

There is a permanent alteration in the butt stock, which has to have a fitting put into it to receive the T shaped quick detach pin that is on the other end of the sling. But, it is far less obtrusive than a swivel.
If the sling isn't there the fitting is easy to miss.

Unlike our 1/4 ton friend. Who seems to enjoy quoting and then altering the posts of others to make up for the lack of intelligence in his own posts. The notion that someone who posted here earlier could think that dumbass jOe might grasp the mechanical idea of a bretelle Darne, while ignoring the fact that jOe can't even properly structure a complete sentence, is a little bit sad.

You know, Steve, I own the predecessor to the Browning, a Remington 241 that was my Dad's. I was always suspect of the take down feature and what it did to accuracy, but my Dad installed a cantilever scope mount on the gun (he couldn't see iron sights after his cataract surgery) and the danged thing seems to be much improved, if a bit uglier. I bore sighted it and ran a dozen or so standard velocity .22 rounds through it, at about 16 yards, and I wouldn't want to be a bushy tail, from here to there, with that old .22 pointed at me.

I own a set of the Pachmayr flush mount swivels and bases, but haven't put them on a gun yet. I've never seen them on a gun, but they look kind of neat. I don't know what is done on the front end, but the back looks pretty neat. I bought them to put on a custom rifle that already has flush mounts, but the part that goes on the sling was missing. Unfortunately, they missed being compatible by a little. However, if you buy the Pachmayr set, you have both compatible ends.

Mike, when is Joe going to graduate from your shooting school?? BTW, some cameras have image stabilizers which keep the camera from shaking due to laughter spasms when you photograph your student missing birds. Gil
