It is especially handy when watering the dogs or messing with their boots or taking pictures of my shooting student Joe Wood missing birds.
Get rid of the dogs,.......... hunt in peace and quiet and offload the whistles and bags, water, food, saliva wipes and other doggie paraphenelia then you won't need a sling or swivels......and the associated ugliness it adds........you will also see a lot more game of all types......  .........just an opinion...... I grew up hunting bob white and pheasant without dogs. Then when I got out of college my Dad and I partnered on an English Pointer named ADAM-YOU-BASTARD. We bought him to up the body count. Dad and AYB both got too old to hunt at about the same time. But sometime during AYB's career with us it quit being about putting birds in the bag and became all about the dogs. I don't hunt now. But I do take my dogs hunting. I drive for them and I boot them up and I pull cactus out of their butts and porcupine quills out of their noses and I gun for them and I carry their water and dead birds. I drive them to the vet when they get bitten by the rattlesnake and I nurse them through the recovery (or cry when they don't). But if it wasn't for them I wouldn't even go out in the field. You are right. We got about the same amount of birds before we had bird dogs as we did after. Best, Mike

Lots of truth in that statement. My only caveat to it would be for retrievers. I love retrievers, and know that they find many birds I otherwise would not, especially ducks. But, they ARE a lot of trouble. SRH

Pete, are the swivels attached to the barrels with screws ?

As several said, I really like having a sling on my shotgun. It is especially handy when watering the dogs or messing with their boots or taking pictures of my shooting student Joe Wood missing birds. Well, an (english) gentleman who takes part on a driven hunt does'nt need a sling at all with standing all the gamekeepers and their dogs around him. But what about me(you) hunting and the dog bring's me a hare, not yet dead.... as the Doyen of the german Gun instructors, Baron von Fürstenberg once said: "with the gun in my hands I have to kill him with my teeth" ;-) That's why a sling is pretty nice! I made a non marring sling. It was a simple loop for the barrels and a buckle bracelet that tightened behind the trigger guard. The gun weight was born by the trigger guard side. The barrel loop was mostly a guide to hold the barrels upright. It was OK for carrying and it never scratched or marked any gun. No swivels needed and during hunting it could be shoved into a pocket.
It must have been good, because someone stole it. Easy to make too, from an old leather belt.

I don't hunt now. But I do take my dogs hunting. But if it wasn't for them I wouldn't even go out in the field.

Mike, In that case, make your life easy and buy the SA4505 Durable Canvas slip case from Dixie Gun Works and stitch a leather strap of your choice to it. If you want soft, buy the same thing in Moose or Deer skin, although the canvas is more durable. SA4505 is available in lengths of 52", 63" and 48" and has a nice flap for easy gun removal and you can leave the flap open (tucked inside) if you choose for really easy removal...... Saves on button rub, brush rub, trees, cactus, animals, trucks, rocks and other mars and scratches from outside sources even an unforseen slip..........and they are cheap, buy a couple, two or three....I think they are $10.95 each.....

Pete, are the swivels attached to the barrels with screws ? The Fox has a brazed front swivel that allows the stud to be unscrewed. The Bayard is brazed to the bottom rib. I also have a Beretta 20ga that uses the same method. From what Researcher has turned up, a batch of Fox guns had the factory swivels. Mine was sold to a sporting goods store in Cuba. Pete
