I told him "the dog told me it was a hen". He couldn't comprehend how that was so. But a point for that long, that late in the season, usually is a hen.

the more I learn about my fellow man the more I like dogs... You haven't lived full time in a 33' RV with two of the critters, you'd probably change your tune if you did. Steve Ah well, it'll probably be one dog soon, the little Maltese, one of my late wife's Royal Rodents, turned 15 a few months ago. Lil has a heart condition and even with meds I give her she'll probably be joining my wife soon.

Steve I owned a dog who eventually got good enough that he didn't point hen pheasants, which led to some startling flushes of hens in my face as I was sprinting up to the dog pointing a rooster. But, he joined his ancestors years ago. It took me longer to figure out what was going on then it took him to figure out we didn't shoot hens. My labrador owning friends didn't believe such a thing was possible, until they saw it. They also didn't believe how often he found birds in a field that the Labs had missed. Before I start waxing poetic about what a great dog he was, let me tell you, he was the meanest SOB that ever came out of a setter kennel in North America. Except, to me. I couldn't keep him with my life as it is today. But, I miss him anyway, especially when a crippled bird is on the ground. Best, Ted

Doug I don't use a whistle but I have been known to yell at my dogs. All in all I don't think a fellow blowing his whistle at his dogs spoils the outback serenity any more than an unmuffled airplane engine and its associated prop noise. My dogs haven't hunted pheasant enough to learn that we don't shoot hens. They are so smart they can open the U-latch on the chain link fenced kennel and push the latch handle down on the wooden fence gate and beat me back to the truck if I forget to put a bolt in those latches. JRB it would be a waste to put one of those nice pads on this gun, kind of like buying sexy lingerie for Roseanne Barr.  Ted when my one of my dogs brings back a wounded pheasant after a long hard chase or after a thorough search of dense cover you couldn't buy that dog for $20,000. That is a thrill. (Especially if my companion made the bad shot) Steve are you on the road yet? Life has interfered and I don't know if I am going to get to go to Montana this Fall. the more I learn about my fellow man the more I like dogs... Speaking for your fellow men the more we learn about you the more we like dogs.

I enjoyed being around Mike when we met in Kansas, he had a sense of humor that was similar to the sense of humor my wife had. Being around Mike keeps you mentally on your toes.
Mike, I should be heading to Tucson in about a month. I plan to spend the rest of the winter in Tucson, I expect to do some quail hunting there. Around April I plan to start my loop through the west. I'll keep all y'all here posted.
BTW about those hens, what would confuse my dog was that we used to go to a preserve that was 25 miles from my house. Hens were okay to shoot at the preserve, then we'd go after wild birds and they weren't okay to shoot. Samba would get so frustrated she'd turn around and give me the stink-eye.

My opinion is I'd rather have a ho-hum dog along for a trip hunting than anything to do with an aircraft. If you got time, fly, as they say. But, that is my opinion, and if you can post some legitimate research that says I'd do better using a plane to find my birds, hey, I'll likely listen to it on a public forum without calling you names.

Ted, Well let's see now, you've already called me "ignorant" and "know it all" and "anti-library" simply because I prefer to hunt different than you, all based on your opinions without having any facts in hand to understand how I hunt. You are the one that jumped on this thread blowing your horn and assuming everyone is as interested in "grouse" as you are .........(BTW--we have a lot more entertaining game birds out here than grouse). ........and that anyone hunting without a dog can't be successful, citing your grouse book author and his Minnesota study as the divine word...... Is it just possible that you don't know everything Ted....?..... I have NO desire to provide you with any research or data or any specifics about people who hunt the Wilderness BLM lands of this country....Why should I provide any information that would further encourage the destruction of the very few places that are still pristine...?... One thing the pristine Western Wilderness areas do not need are people with dogs blowing whistles and yelling, but thanks for your opinion. Good Luck, I never said you couldn't be successful without a dog. That would be your own demons speaking to you, and you can leave my voice out of those that reside in your head, Thank You Very Much. I simply posted evidence from a renown researcher and his studies that documented a dog and two hunters have better success hunting ruffed grouse than just about any other combination. Although Mr Gullion documented that to be the case in a very long term study in central Minnesota, it isn't too much of a stretch to see it could very easily apply to other birds, or, areas. Success, in regards to the study, would include finding birds that had been hit, and couldn't fly, but were still very much alive. How is your percentage on that? With your 60 seasons behind you, are you sprinting after and recovering many birds these days? I've had my dogs return with birds I never even knew I hit, and wouldn't have found, otherwise. I guess stewardship has different meanings between people sometimes. I don't believe I've been responsible for the destruction of anything related to the outdoors, and I doubt my dogs have, either. We have recovered our own and the winged birds of others, keeping the waste factor at a minimum, over the years. My dogs were pretty much hand signal trained, and you would likely never notice us in the west, if we were there. I'm going to hunt the West sometime, and I have an offer to go to Idaho, as we speak, actually. But, I'm probably going to give it a decade or two before I go. Nothing like having time, eh?
