Your opinion runs smack into the research by the late Gordon Gullion when it comes to grouse hunting. Breed of dog didn't matter, but dogless hunting of any sort was farther down the success chart.
My own experience agrees with this study.
They were dogless. BIrdless, too. Late season pheasant hunting, without a dog, is mostly hiking.

that we all are hard core grouse hunters and have the same level of interest in that bird that you seem to. Maybe it's because of your flatland only experience....?...

As far as hunting in Idaho, you should give it a decade or two...good idea....you would stick out like a sore thumb.
