Was out shooting today and decided to use one of my better Piepers. It's a model 485E boxlock, circa 1910 or thereabouts, with 29.5" chopper lump barrels. Had a nice afternoon, dog was behaving for once and as I arrived back at the truck after the last bird, I noticed something was missing from my stock!

I was shooting Gamebore Pure Gold 2.5 inch 1 ounce loads of number six shot. Not the lowest pressure possible (no RST available here) but not bad. Of course, absolutely impossible to find the missing piece in the field.

After talking with CJO I am determined to have most of my stocks glassed. I had this stock off about 6 years ago for a complete, professional refinish and re-checker. Had the stock been glassed at that point I doubt this would have happened.

It might be worth while to look at the length and profile of the firing pins. From a safety point of view I'd say it was mandatory.

There is a good chance that the pin pierced the cap allowing the propellant gasses to enter the action body. The increase in pressure can then blow out a bit of wood round the stock head, or at the very least severely weaken it.

I had this happen some years ago, fortunately on the right side of the gun so the sliver flew over my ear; for a right handed shooter the damage resulting from your pics show could have been disastrous.

That is enough to make you sick. I had an "ear" break off on a sidelock last year, and the only consolation I had was that it happened in the house and I found the piece. Perhaps I am a bit of an optimist, but I would hunt the same area and take a look around where I remembered shooting.

Good luck with the repair.

Brian, my son Gordon was with me so I had to watch my language. LOL

Can't say I'm happy about it but it is as Ed said in his post....it happens to old guns sometimes.

Sadly Ed, we can't order either of those brands on line as they are not shipped to Canada.
