My 1914 16 ga. L.C. has developed a barrel bulge that my gunsmith has determined is unsafe and the gun should not be used. Question is ,are L.C barrels interchangeable between pre-1913 and later? Marlin models, hammerless? Any recommendations would be appreciated.

easier, cheaper and usually better off to just find a new one. Barrel are interchangeable.

Go to the LC Smith collectors web sight, there you will find good explanations of the difference in the frames and the possible parts choices. Any barrel will have to be fitted. Barrels can sometimes be found on e bay. MKII

Barrels are interchangeable if you have a welder, files, uncommon skills a massive budget and some dumb luck. It is very rare for a set of LCS barrels to just fit. Some can be fit with reasonable effort.

Another option I bought a Baker shotgun with a split in the barrel. Was going to be a parts gun BUT I have Briley tubes in it for now. So, the gun is still usable but I shoot 28 gauge in it instead of 12. Maybe some day I will tube it to 20 gauge also Mike p.s. http://www.briley.com/fittedtubesets-2.aspx

I have bought some barrels either on ebay or Gun Broker and have had them slip right on to some of my L.C. Smith hammer guns. One barrel is from a Grade 1 and the other was from another hammer gun.
Hammer guns were all built on a Regular frame, hammerless after 1907, some were built on a FW frame (Featherweight).
Since these were production guns, all were hand fit and the jigs used to align the barrel loop were all very close in tolerances.
The hardest thing to fit is the for-end to the bastard barrel.
It is better if you can find a set of barrels within a few years of your serial number +/-.
Naturally, Regular frame barrels will not fit a FW frame and vice-versa.

It is a matter of luck, but transplants are possible.
I purchased a 20ga Field Grade ejector and was able to move its barrels to an LC 5E 20ga with only minor filing and it worked well. It made for a nice second shorter set of barrels as the original were 30 inch. That said not all attempts will be that easy.
