Yes, that is definitely a back action, but the Smiths I was actually referring to are the later hammerless guns, whose side plates look like a bar action externally. They are however actually back action. There is nothing in the forward projection of the plate which fits into the bar. All the works are behind the frame with the mainspring behind the hammer. Same is true of the Baker hammerlesss sidelocks as well.
