Beautiful stock shape. That is the way a full length Mannlicher stock should be done. Would eliminate the clumsiness between the action and the slender forestock. Thank you.

Stock design reminds me of some odd designs shown in Howe's Gunsmithing book.

Could not stand it anymore and pulled off the forend tip.

It looked like it was repaired at least a couple times. When the tip was first installed the was a small hole in the tip to let air and glue escape. The next time it was glued without anyplace for the air or glue to go so the tip would not seat flush. It filled a space with glue between the tip and stock which dried out and got loose. Then a couple of holes were drilled (badly) and pins driven in. You can see the layer of dried glue on the stock side.

Looks like horn. You can cut plugs out of scrap horn with a plug cutter, if you can stand the smell, or better to cut slowly, to not burn the scrap plugs. An undersize tap can cut some teeth in the old cap, for something to key in the epoxy for a better hold, when the wood shrinks and expands, and clean out all the old glue.

Found an initial shield under the patina ;-). A lot more blending and oil work but headed in the right direction.

My thanks to Bob Beach and G&H for the following information about this rifle.

It was sold as a used rifle in 1926 "maker not listed" at VL&D to Dr. G.H. Cox.

In 1930 Dr. Cox consigned it to A&F, it did not sell and was returned to Dr. Cox in 1931.
