For a field gun, it's an accident waiting to happen. They're innately more fragile than a solid rib. Lose your footing or swing into a branch, and instead of a superficial character ding you'll have a kinked rib. I had vent rib on a Franchi OU that I used for everything back in the 70s. I was young and stupid and spent a lot of time in boats. By the time I sold that poor gun the rib looked like the grade profile of the ALCAN highway between Wjitehorse and Haines Junction. Older wiser folk will surely do better, but the odds are not good.
