A 16 gauge Model 21 with ventilated rib is a rare and beautiful creation. None of my vent rib 21s or Parkers has given me anything but pleasure. My wonderful vent rib L.C. Smith was built in 1907, rebarrelled a little later and has no sign of a dent.

From a practical standpoint, they typically put the eye a bit higher for a better view of things out front. If you recall, L. C. Smith achieved the same thing with their Single Sighting Plane solid rib.

The rest is esthetics. To my eye they look very natural, and good, on American guns, but not so much on European guns.

Shoot what makes you happy.

A vent rib is neither a deal maker or a deal breaker for me. Depends on the overall look and feel of the gun. I have dinged a couple of vent ribs, but that's why Brownells sells a vent rib straightener. It do work well.

the first sxs I ever bought was a 1929 Francotte 20e pigeon gun, with original vent rib, got it from our late pal Owl-Eye (RIP).
It was a pure target Gun with 32" bbl,big old BT forend..about 81/2lb+..I thought it looked just fine...though I found out it was to heavy for me..but it was in real nice shape, very well put together, &n looked just lovely.
I really wish I could of kept it...but I couldn't shoot it well.
But it sure looked the part for a big Pigeon Gun

I think some of us on here would be interested in Owleye's old Francotte 20 gauge. Maybe you can clue us in to its present owner.

You should have kept that gun as it's probably one of only few if not the only one out there. In America people own many guns they never shoot.
The VR is very common when one realizes that vertical gun is horizontal gun with barrels rotated 180deg or 90deg depending on fulcrum point.

Alas that I didn't have the funds then (or now:)to "Retire" it..:)I'm afraid.
It was too much Gun for me...sold it for what I payed for it about a year later.
It was in lovely nick, lots of colour..I bet with the right guy driving, it was have been a real cruncher...
Have not the faintest recollection of who, from where, bought it.
He seemed to know his F'cottes though.
He asked me to look for a tiny stamp on the stock..& indeed twas there.
I think he had a 20bore version of this model
I sure wish I'd kept it
cheers lads
