The W E Brownell handles show up on Ebay now and again I was just informed by another lurker.
Never cheap, but what is I guess,,it's not like you use them once and throw them away.
Though some people may have after their first experience w/ the exciting world of wood checkering.
Mine are 35 y/o or older maybe and still in one piece.

Seach Ebay for simply 'Brownell(s) Checkering' or 'W E Brownell' I'm told and they may show up.

At least you can see what they look like. Maybe they can be found other places.

W E Brownell was a totally different business from the Brownells Gunsmith Supply operation as I understand it.
Just the similar name got many to think that the latter made and marketed the tools. As always,,I may have that wrong too!

Best to you in your new endeavor...

I'm stalking ebay and I see'em. I'm trying to get a handle on their current values. I have seen the Larry Potterfield Youtub video where he uses them in checkering some sort of bolt action stock.

Brownells the tool company is in San Diego CA, Brownells' the supply house is just down the road from me in Grinnell IA.

Sometimes, I am thicker than a brick. I found a number and called Brownells and an incredibly nice guy answered (so 20th Century!). They are still in business and will email me a catalog. What could be better!

The checkering/carving on that Marlin is not factory, most assuredly an amateur hand.
Kennedy's checkering book sucks, unfortunately. I am doing the final proofs on a new checkering How-to book called The Final Touch by Joel Schafer contact info is in the latest Am. Rifleman, at tiny blurb on the book review pages (46). Vastly better than Monte's...

Well, that's too bad.

Is there a similar blurb somewhere in American Hunter (that is the NRA publication that I elected)? If not, do you have a source and a price for it?

It never fails to amaze me that people who, compared to Monte Kennedy may only be a footnote in gunmaking history can say without qualification, a long recognized work "SUCKS" and in the same sentence have the cojones to steer people towards a book he is "proofing". Talk about self aggrandizement.

BrentD,

I have to agree with SDH, Monty Kennedy's book tells you damn little on how to checker. There's plenty of pictures of the work of various stock makers of the 40's and 50's including all the top notch craftsman. But nothing on how they did their work. I've had my copy some 40 years now and I still occasionally look at it but it isn't helpful to anyone starting off checkering. My advice get some descent checkering tools and a lot of scrap Walnut, lay out a design and practice cutting straight lines. Then graduate to shaped pieces of scrap and learn how to cut around curves BEFORE you try it on a finished stock. Bad checkering looks a lot worse than no checkering at all.

Joel's book has yet to be reviewed.
Hope it has good information and not just a coffee table book. Its $75 plus $8 shipping.
