My personal opinion on Carving on stocks is that it is very tasteful and beautiful when worked into a checkering pattern or as part of a checkering border or an extension of such. Much like most of the examples shown in this thread.
But carving in the middle of a butt or in the middle of open space like game scenery and such is just for the birds. But... That is just how I feel.

Agreed. I don't just like, I love the Hoffman style, but the China Connection above is a bit too over the top for me.

Michael, based off of the Hoffmans shown, should we presume that John Wright was the carver/checkerer of them? We've seen at least two distinct styles with G&H, the Adolph 'incised' style and the carved style of Wright more common with Hoffmans.

MP,

You have found some very tasteful and beautiful carvings, ones that look like they may have taken months of work to design and produce.

It is the ones that look like a "weekend with a dremel" that I find offensive. Although I am sure there are many that do enjoy these, to me very few on this page are passable, most are a lot less than that. https://www.google.com/search?q=carved+s...ch&imgdii=_

Every time I presume I seem to make more mistakes in attributions. Now I try to judge each rifle on it's own merits and try not to make any blanket statements.

There were three Wrights, John Sr, sons John Jr. and Samuel G. Wright.

John Jr. came to the US first and I believed worked for G&H before moving to Hoffman. Did all three or only on Wright do this type of stock work I just don't know.

This rifle is marked "John Wright & Sons Kansas City Mo" at a time when both sons were living in Cleveland , Ohio.
