I have a Midland hammer gun left to me by my dad it has a serial # of 16838 can anyone tell me about the gum ?

Yes, most likely but to do so we need most specifically photos of all the markings on the gun. The barrels flats and anything on the top rib.

That Serial # should date your gun somewhere between 1896 & 1904.
During that period Midland sold a variety of hammer guns made in Birmingham and a few cheaper guns made in Belgium.
I have a reprint of their 1933 catalogue and at that time their 'Best' Sidelock ejector sold for 50 ( around $77) and they still listed muzzle loading doubles for just over 3 (say $5)

I have a 1936 Midland catalog in pdf. It is 13mb. I also have a 1914 catalog, not in pdf. The hammer gun models are almost all the same in both catalogs, so the 1936 one should help you ID which gun. Proof marks on the bottom of the barrel flats will provide a range of dates your gun was made.
Midland records no longer exist.

I have a Midland catalogue circa 1900.Based on the manufacturing date suggested by others,It should be possible to accurately identify your gun once we can view pictures.
