Hello Lads, and a Happy New Year to you all I absolutely love WW Greeners Gun & it's Development...I have had it for years ( the $20 pbk reprint of course)/ Its right next to the loo roll in the "Bog"...here is this really good old school gunmaker/inventor telling you an amazing amount of stuff, with some rather lovely turns of phrase, & some very seldom heard words.I just flip it n read whatever he;s talking about on that page...Christ , I wish it came with a Video :)I bet you had to really know your stuff, n be up to the mark to be a foreman, or even a skilled worker in one of those shops. Any other good kinda semi tec books written by other hands on Gunmakers from that era ?. How about other books by Greener ? Anything stand out? cheers franc

Books by gunmakers, one that comes to mind, though I have not seen it first hand is by Lancaster, the title might be "On Shooting" or somem such.
Churchill had some things ghost written by MacDonald Hastings.

Letters to Young Shooters: on the Choice and Use of a GunRalph William Frankland-Payne-Gallwey, Ralph Payne-Gallwey, 1892 http://books.google.com/books?id=Eh9DAAAAIAAJ"The Merits of Chokes and Cylinders, As Applied To Their Effect On Game and Suitability To The Shooter" http://www.classicshooting.com/shotguns-barrels-chokes.htm The Art of Wing Shooting: A Practical Treatise on the Use of the Shotgun William Bruce Leffingwell 1895 http://books.google.com/books?id=e34EmE3tkfkCThe young sportsman can not be too cautious in handling the gun of some one who hands it to him for inspection. Compliments of the gun are expected and decidedly in order; but the snapping of the hammers and the violent slamming of the gun together, are little things of themselves, but they may bring about a decided coolness on the part of the owner of the gun. Be careful, therefore, how you handle your friend's gun, and you will be justified if you take the same resolution a sportsman did a century ago when he vowed, "I will never loan my wife, my dog, or my gun." Not by a gunmaker but one of my favourite books is 'The Shooter's Handbook' by Richard Arnold, who was one off.
Charles Lancaster's 'Art of Shooting' was written by then M.D of the firm H.A.A Thorn. It is a nice, easy and informative book.
Donald Dallas just did a book with/about David MacKay Brown.

Its not an old book but Graham Greener's book, "The Greener Story" is an excellent book. It covers the models, makes and gun making history of W.W. Greener.

I have that same book in the paperback version Franc and it is indeed fascinating. I first saw it at a friend's house. He had an original hard back copy that he found at a garage sale for $1.00!! I worried him so long about selling it to me that he finally found the re-issue for me on Amazon and I immediately bought it. An absolute storehouse of gun knowledge!!
