Lloyd, I'd bet you already know it, but the Rem. 17 and the Savage/Stevens 520 are original John Moses Browning designs. Who could ask for better lineage?...Geo

I am most-definitely a fan of John Moses and that is exactly why that little 520 followed me home. Sadly, I found it to be built on a 12 bore frame and too-heavy for my purposes. The safety also caused me some concern (an in the trigger-guard variant). The take-down mechanism was way-cool, however.

My 520 16ga is the straight top variety with the tang safety. I'm considering having it engraved like an A-5 Sweet Sixteen and telling folks on the dove field its one of the super rare pump sweet 16s! I'd like to meet the guy smart enough to have figured out by himself how to take that gun down...Geo

I missed an opportunity to buy a 520 double-hump 20 with the safety behind the triggerguard that appeared to be in lovely shape, but I'm afraid that it would be 7-lbs as well. My next target is either a 16 or a 20 Model 31. What is neat is to be able to do this so inexpensively. What a great education for almost no tuition!

Very interesting, I had always thought the 31 was pure Pendersen but I see now Browning was also involved in its linage.

I didn't know that. He was crossed-up with Winchester by then, so he would have been available.

It's probably just me, but I'd be far more excited about a fairly ratty 16-bore that I could buy for $200 and then clean it up.

You're not alone. $10,000 is more along the lines of truck money.

I think that Greibel engraved 31 was shown in the Gun Digest Engraving section at least once. Maybe a different 31 with the same pattern, It just looks familiar.
He took the factory markings and serial number off the left side of the rec'vr. Then added the ser# back onto the bottom of the rec'vr, hand cut. That was the normal way Remington would do serial numbers on factory engraved guns. Those factory markings can get in the way of a fine game scene.
I see someone 'ported' the bbl on that fine old gal. Well,,, I withdraw my $10.5K bid then.
??,,,wasn't the vent rib on the M31 made as one piece with the bbl?? or did I dis-remember that incorrectly from somewhere.
