I fly with guns at least a couple of times a year. It's never the same exact process from year-to-year (the signed card goes inside the case, now the card gets taped outside the case, & "you lock the case", no, TSA locks the case...)and there are differences between airlines (a training issue?). The trick is to keep calm, have a locking case (I use one with combination locks built-in) and give yourself plenty of time to check-in your luggage. I think it is now a weight issue (11-lbs), but in past years it was something like two boxes of shells per gun. I cant speak to handguns, but for long guns it's still pretty straightforward.

FWIW: some destinations can be dicey, such as Boston, NYC, and D.C. California may now be complicated as well. On those locations, some homework and a call to the airline is advised.
