There is a Lefever book. I'll have to go find mine. "Guns of Lasting Fame" is the title (I believe). The Lefever Arms Collector Association webpage may have more information about the later guns as well.

"Uncle Dan Lefever - Master Gunmaker" is the expanded version of the above cited book; Robert Elliott is the sole listed author on the Uncle Dan book. The 1958 article contains some misinformation. Here is a link to photos of most of the grades of the D M Lefever "cross bolt" guns - they start about 3/4 of the way through the photo section. http://www.lefevercollectors.com/index.php?p=1_18_Photos

Thanks. Yes, I realize the author is off on the date and details of Dan's departure from LAC. I was asking about the (what I assume to be) custom engraving the original owner specified in the India ink drawing at time of order. Perhaps details are lost to time.

It is hard to tell much from the magazine, but IF that is the gun he bought from his friend, you can see that it does not have the "wings" on the barrels usually associated with higher grade guns. My guess is that what is shown is 7D or lower. If his memory was off by a year or two (after more than 50!), the $125 conforms to the 1905 price of an 8E with single trigger.
Engraving patterns on cross bolts do seem to be variable, so I would not be surprised if the friend did order what would now be one of the impossible to identify as to grade guns - perhaps engraving with different birds or dogs than "usual", and fancy wood with simple checkering. The magazine article does not seem to show one of the fancy checkering patterns with carving on the cheeks usually found on the highest grade guns.

Here is a late 5B, poorly restocked (before it was done again)

Brings back memories, as this was one of the magazines my dad bought back then. I remember the ads that Ye Old Hunter (Interarms?) had. Fast draw was in its' infancy. Article on side bys was well written and I enjoyed reading Charlie Askins's article on Spanish gunmakers.
