I've learned the hard way about not spending a dime on something before the other party does what they must do. They never do, and just figure you are donating to their cause.
Now I just write it in that "If you do this, I will reimburse you up to this," and go no further.

A contract is formed when there is an acceptance of a binding offer for sale.

By the way, under the Statute of Frauds, no binding contract for the sale of goods over $500 unless in writing.
