Hi Lloyd3:

The German and Austrian gun makers have many different combinations in 20 ga. 16 ga over .22 hornet, .222 Rem. or .222 Rem Mag as well as several European calibers. Merkel, Hyme, Blazer, Ferlach are just a few. In all price ranges.

Steve and King, that first round 24 .22 barrel inaccuracy sounds like bad ignition to me. Steve's gun probably had a broken, but not entirely broken, firing pin, so that the ctgs. were getting ignited differently each time (firing pin front half was jiggling around).

The first rule with Savage break-open rifles--24, 219 etc.--is DON'T dry fire them. Breaks the pin someplace every time (DON'T ask how I found out...).

Don't know about the shotguns, because my first rule with any shotgun, cheapo or less-cheap, is "get a snap cap"!

Lloyd, I'm not sure what Euro Hunter's idea of "all price ranges" is, but I'd say for the first three brands he names, you'd need a couple of grand to start. "Ferlach" is a place where many combos were made, and there were some generic low end ones, but even those go for well over a grand in decent condition (when you can find one).

Not to be discouraging, but just don't expect to find a European combination gun at anywhere NEAR the present inflated price of a Savage 24. On the other hand, they are in a whole different galaxy in quality of workmanship, which might justify the huge price difference!
