Hi David, I think you will have to research this as I may be wrong, but I understood that the size stamped was the largest plug gauge that would go 9" into the bore - so if 0.719 goes, but 0.729 doesn't, it is stamped 13/1.
13/1 was quite common.

0.727 and 0.728 are what would be described as 'marginal' if I am right and the 0.729 plug passing would mean 'out of proof'.

Your wall thicknesses seem to leave plenty of scope for any future work, but in the UK, reproof would be required if the next proof plug would now fit.
This is a legal requirement if the gun is sold, but is not a legal requirement for use (though an insurance claim on an out of proof gun might be interesting!

Please do check up on this because I have not read up on this in a while!

[quote=JohnfromUK]1 1/4 Oz was the normal proof for 2 3/4" chambers.

So what pressure would that have been when proofed and what would be safe working pressures for the gun?

Hi Tim, sorry but I modified my post. The gun itself would be stamped say 1 1/8oz or 1 1/4oz. The change in shot payload I mentioned really means the loadings for the cartridges not the gun itself. Sorry, don't want to confuse you.

Best!

Greg

KY Jon, I can't answer that. I know the proof was specified in terms of maximum load of shot. Pressure was not specified. I assume at that time (late 19th, early 20th century) it was difficult to measure?
There wasn't the same interest then in 'pressures' or 'velocities', perhaps because they were difficult to measure?

Don't worry about the 3 1/4 Ton mark as that wasn't used until after 1954. The 1 1/4 ounce mark and 2 3/4" chamber is the same. Best to get European cartridges if possible and look for the CIP mark on the box. Details on the box will explain what guns they are suitable for. In fact you can use anything European for chamber lengths 2 3/4" or less but not those marked for 2 3/4" Magnum (usually 1 1/2 ounce loads). Nice looking gun by the way. Lagopus.....

Thanks Drew. That's interesting, yeah I was really surprised to see Winchester's literature state 11,500 psi for the AA Low Noise, Low Recoil loads. I had been shooting them for a while and they seemed pretty tame to me. Maybe it's Winchester's highest pressure scenario for liability purposes.

That is interesting! Never seen this data before, but Drew knows his stuff, so no reason to doubt him at all.

Thanks Drew!

Tim, glad you understand what I meant, sorry about that!

Best!

Greg
