That is a nice rifle, but will give opinions that are worth exactly what they cost. Pretty grip cap, shown in another thread, but installed backwards. Other way around would look like the S-shaped grips of some single shots which are very attractive. JMHO

Chuckster,
Thanks for liking the rifle.
I respect your opinion. I did it the way I did as it is the way Marlin did them (IMO) and also Oberlies.
Thanks again

Ric,
As you said you have a ways to go but what you have looks good.
The wood is nice. I really think working from a blank is a much easier job then from the pre-inlet (unless you are working with your own made pre-inlet) I bought my stock from you because I thought the wood was so nice.
Keep us informed on your project please

Did some more looking on the butt cap and you are absolutely correct. Might like it the other way, but it is your rifle and you are doing an excellent job.

Continuing working on the project. The M70 I am using is a transition model. I like these and the pre-war models because of the clover leaf tang and the best looking commercial bolt handles ever (IMO).
This gun came with a Pachmayr side mount which are quite ugly. So I had to design a new mount to use a G & H side mount and I also wanted to have it incorporate a receiver sight. The slide and sight inself I will make now but that is fairly minor work.

Of course polishing still to be done.

Ric,
I took another look at the pic you posted and I noticed that your prepared for any wild buffalo which may invade your backyard. Your old Sharps in the corner will handle the situation just fine. smile

What's the story on the other 3 smokepoles in the pic?

The sharps is a work in progress,I will take a photo or two and start another thread. The muzzle loader next to it is my favorite deer rifle,a 5 3/4#,20 bore belted ball rifle by G.Gibbs.
The flint gun is by Ketland, 32 bore,(.53 cal).,I can't hit anything flying with that 44" barrel,I did manage to take a little whitetail buck with it.
The half stock PA rifle was originally flint,I can't make out the makers name.I bought it for the hooked breech, and I liked the way it looked.I manage to get a meals worth of grey squirrels with it each fall
