It seems like things have been a bit slow, anybody buy any nice rifle or rifles
recently, funds are tight for me at the moment, but I still look.
I thought this post-war custom Winchester Model 52 sporter was kind of nice
to look at.
52 sporter

I blew up the picture of the grip cap and saw that "Walt Krites" was on it
and found that there was a "Walter Krites" in Akron Ohio that shot competitively in the 40's. Any ideas who did the rifle?

I thought the forend on this 1903 sporter was kind of strange, in
"The Rifle in America" by Phil Sharpe, there is a chapter by Robert Milhoan
where he mentions that sometimes customers want strange shaped forends
on their rifles.

I think the 52 has way too much bling for my taste.

The 03 is more interesting, must have been owned by a target shooter.Competition shooters tend do things like that to their stocks.

Whoever commissioned that 52 would have fit right in with the current generation of "look at ME!" shooters with their neon plastic stocks....and Zombie accessories. A 52 sporter deserves better, IMO.

Some brilliant party removed the G&H side mount base and then drilled and tapped the receiver ring on the 03 sporter. Always a sign of good taste.

I like the forend on this 54 winchester, built for it's purpose but not to big to take away other features of the stock. (IMO).

Steven,
Good question, I would think the purpose of the forend shape is to give the rifle more of a target- varmint style look to it. Not so much that I like the extra wood on the forend but I do think that the stockmaker did a good job at what he was commissioned to do. Yourself, as a professional gunmaker is there anything you would do to improve the shape forend if you "had" to build one like it. Dan.

Dan,
I don't do target/varmint for ends. Although I do a variety of shapes, it would be uniform over its full length.
That's why I was wondering?
There is a Jerry Fisher .220 Swift Mauser single shot on my web site that is much more to my tastes.

My clients pretty much like the way I do things but earlier in my career the challenge was sometimes to judiciously talk the client out of a bad idea. I guess we have no idea whose idea this forend was?

When designing a project I always try to have the judgement of future generations in mind. As in; Will this look good, work properly and seem like a good idea in 100 years?
Best,
Steve
