I shoot the five stand with my Weatherby Orion (SKB) 12ga 28" and it's about the only time I use an o/u. I'd like to improve my score and was wondering if a "sporting clays" gun would help in that endeavor. Seems the sporty clays game was made to simulate hunting so if you shoot from the low position the gun used in the game shouldn't vary much from a field gun. Does my desire to improve my score justify trading in the field gun for a special purpose "sporting clays" gun?

Don't trade your old gun. Buy a new gun and then you have two to choose from. I had a sporting clays gun, B325, and I shot it well but I sold my o/u guns and have doubles now. I shoot them just as well as the B325 and they have a lot more character than the average o/u.

I don't know what a new SC gun has that would be much diffrent than what you have now as I don't know the details of your Orion
To my mind if a Gun is of good weight, say 7-7.5 +lbs, stocked abit on the straight side, longish bbls, perhaps a little weight forward in the balance department & feels good while swinging, its a good 5 stand or SC gun.
My two SxSs are older Pigeon Guns that fit those spec's( and ME) well, & seem to be great at target games...though I hate & don;t shoot skeet.
Got any nice old sxs Pig' Guns in the safe???
good shooting
Franc
