I am 100% in agreement with you. Under no circumstances should anyone put a dirty aluminum cleaning rod in their mouth. I'll generalize further and state that one shouldn't put anything dirty in their mouths.

Wood as we all know is absorbent and will pick up whatever chemicals it's exposed to so after a while your going to be dragging God knows what thru the bores of your firearms. I have this same issue with bore snakes.
At least with metal rods, either steel or aluminum, they can be cleaned periodically and that's exactly what I do with mine.
