It looks for all the world to me like a more or less typical post-war Port Clinton era Owen stock. They were very cookie cutter in appearance. Several examples are illustrated in Dunlaps gunsmithing book. They generally do not bring the price that a pre-war Owen rifle will.

Some nice pictures of a similar rifle Here

Thaine: I'm kinda funny about Krags. The really nice ones, G&H's and Niedner's always bring big money. I always end up thinking I could get an 03 or 98 for that kind of money. The Krags,I have observed are very hard to sell to anyone but "krag nuts" like the late Mark Benenson. Especially at the top dollars everyone seems to want for them. Secondly, since I am still actively involved in a day to day law practice, I always say "if I had time to reload, I have the ammo to shoot during that time, instead". As a result, I have a rule [just mine]. I don't buy anything that requires reloading or a custom ammo supplier....unless it is a stone cold steal...a giveaway. The quality of modern factory loads is so high and if you watch for sales and closeouts, reloading advantages really aren't the factor they were in the 60's and 70's. MOA is achievable in most of my guns with several different factory loads. Wildcats and Obsolete cartridges are time consuming for me and that is time I can't spare, at least for now.

I'm reminded of the opening line of the fly fishing story "Murder", by Sparse Grey Hackle. which can be analogous to that, Jerry. "If fishing interferes with your business, give up your business." smile

Gary: Well Said, however I'm only 61 and would draw just enough Social Sescewutu to pay for my hunting tags on a couple of hunts a year. However I have 185 acres near the Musselshell River in MT. with a nice Cabin on it, and it's paid for. Sooooooooooo give me a few more years and I'll be there, with not a thought to the years [38 of them, now] I spent doing the Lawyer thing.
If I'm not careful and don't leave soon enough, I'll find myself on "The Road To Tinkhamtown"

Thanks

Jerry

Jerry,
You are already over the hill at 61,you can't wait long or you won't be able to follow your birddog around. Believe me, there are more than 10 years between 55 and 65 years old.

I'm 61 too, and am now too gimpy to follow a hunting dog through the grouse coverts. Regrets? Only that I would have done even more hunting and less working than I did.

I was on the road to Tinkhamtown once, but thankfully wandered off the trail and couldn't find my way back on. Of course, when I think of my dad and other lost hunting pardners waiting for me there...

I betcha Michael has a shooting bench there on the edge of town and is putting a Niedner through its paces as we speak!

…and a paper plate for a target.

(Jerry, I hope the Musselshell River flood has not affected your property except to maybe irrigate and spread a bit of new top soil around. The dikes at Roundup were holding as of last night… the town flooded twice in '11 and had major wildfires all around in '12.)

My watch list from last week. the winning bidder seams to have no limits to his .38-44 funds, the long barreled, fixed sight guns are scarce... http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.aspx?Item=397294093

Did we all graduate from high school in 1970? I was lucky enough to retire about seven years ago, still won't have time,(or physical ability) to complete to list.

To get back to guns.

I went up to Rock Island to check out this heavy barrel 03. 03 Target

It had some issues, and the Sporter that it was sold with had 9 holes drilled in the receiver. I think 4 of them in the receiver ring and all crooked. The lot sold to a phone bidder for WAY more than I felt it should. Hope he is not to disappointed when he gets it.
