A shooter can get accustomed to most any degree of lock time. I have seen some fantastic shooting done with m/l with exremely slow lock time, as compared to today's standard. The key is in shooting a gun, or guns, with nearly the same lock time. A flintlock shotgun requires a much better follow through than a modern breechloader. A man that is good with a m/l will shoot your eyes out with a breechloader. Kinda like shooting snooker for a time, then going back to nine ball.
"Beware the man with one gun" is an old axiom with much basis in fact, lock time being a part, albeit a small part, of it.

Selling point to appeal to those who can be talked in to believing that it matters . True. Much like the oft-touted strength of a Winchester 21, which was still ticking after a couple thousand proof loads. Goes way beyond what's necessary in a shotgun.

Yeah. It's pretty boring to watch a guy break 99 out of a hundred at sporting, or run 500 straight at skeet, I guess. Those who do this aren't shooting a closet full of guns, that's for sure. SRH

Guns from the same manufacturer probably don't even have the same lock time. Grease/no grease, oil/no oil, spray lube, bare metal on metal, hot, cold, inbetween, humid, etfingcetera, and you can tell the difference???? Give me a break! That's like telling the difference in burn rates and barrel times between different cartridges.
Anyone who profess to be able to discern differences in locktime in modern shotguns is a candidate for the neurological dissection table. Or some other special ward.

Dr.WtS Actually, Ripon was said to be able to do just that. He wouldn't use the early Schultze powder because he said it was 'not as fast as No2 black'. Nobody at Schultze believed him at first, but then they ran precision tests and lo! their powder proved to have considerably longer barrel time indeed! They had to give old Ollie a special trial session at a shooting grownd after fixing the problem; he never looked back to black ever since. As told in Teasedale-Buckell's Experts on Guns and Shooting.

Dr.WtS It is not that hard to discern a fast lock time from a slow one, by dry firing the gun. Put a slow squeeze on it, as you would a target pistol, and listen carefully. You can tell a fast one from a slow one, not that it matters to any consequence in shooting flying. SRH

I suspect some long handicap trap shooters can discern differences in lock times. And if one can discern a difference ...whether it's measurably different or not...it can certainly affect performance.
Some people insist there's no difference in target performance between a 6 lb SxS and a 9 lb O/U ... and they can demonstrate it for you.
