Why use a pad without a built in peak when you can buy one with the peak? The Griffin and Howe repro Silver pad has a peak and the original Silver has a peak. I have used both and they are very nice on larger butts.

I filled one in with a mixture of epoxy and carbon black with a little graphite powder. It looks great and cheap!

There is a way of removing glued plastic from a gun stock, put the stock in a polythene bag and put it in the freezer for a couple of days. The cold causes the plastic to shrink and break the glue bond if an epoxy resin glue has been used to fix it to the wood, also taking it out of the freezer and working quickly give the plastic a good sharp tap with a hammer in the centre very often shatters the plastic.
I have used this method myself and it works fine with no damage to the wood.

I think the Griffin and Howe is more of what I'm looking for thanks.Not a good picture but if the pads long and wide enough it will work.The freezer sounds like a neat trick I'll let you know if it worked.

Monty, is the butt end of the wood still curved? The photo sure looks like it. If so, the butt hasn't been trimmed as you and I thought.

hair dryer worked pretty easy.Tried the freezer but It is so humid here it made it sweat and had condensation on the metal. I guess I should have said it still had the metal attached.

I'll send you photos of a leather covered pad with the widows peak covered as well. If I can do it, and I don't do it every day, I know a real pro can do it. They do take longer than a flat one but don't do anything drastic with that Widows Peak like fill it in. Don't make this any harder than it has to be. I'll try to post pictures to this site tomorrow. I got your E mail.I am not going to do anything to the wood and definitely won't fill the peak.I am thinking about getting the pad from Griffin and Howe and making an attempt on fitting it.Might take two tries.... I have not figured out how you fit the peak..... but it's just rubber and time.I have a little time and they aren't going to run out of rubber.

Here are pictures from Photobucket of two guns here with widows peaks and Leather Covered Pads that extend into the peak. One is a thick pad (about 1 1/4") the customer needed to make up the LOP and it is not particularly attractive. The other worked quite well and I would think that might be a good way to go especially if the pad is less than an inch or so. You could still produce a pad with the correct thickness by using a spacer and fitting that to the curvature of the buttstock then providing for the widows peak and finally covering the whole thing and creasing the lines into the border.
