A good friend recently gave me a 20 gauge N.I.D. It’s in pretty good overall condition but it has a problem with the top lever latch. If I push it over to the right it rarely stay there. Generally it snaps right back to the center as soon as I stop applying pressure. Was this a common problem with early N.I.D.s and is there a fix?
So far I’ve removed the trigger plate (with the spring), the sears and the stock. I have the receiver laying on my bench and I still can’t figure out what’s wrong.
I can push the top lever over to the right and use a punch to push the U shaped latch up to engage the rotary bolt but it seems as though the bolt only wants to cam the latch down instead of being engaged and stopped by it.
Any suggestions / help would be greatly appreciated.
