I have read that in the late 1800's there were several patents introduced for the electric ignition of a firearm. Pieper in Belgium had one such patent. I would love to see a photo of such a gun and cartridge. Does anyone have any experience with these guns/cartridges? I'm wondering why there was no success in marketing such an invention because supposedly these guns and shells were functional. They actually worked.
Socialism is almost the worst.

Best, Craig Ok Einstein. OWD is absolutely right.....(REMOVED) There were 7 patents on these electric guns in the 1890's, so I guess some other people thought it was a worthy subject at least 125 yrs ago. With all this political garbage on this web site I thought it would be fun to talk about something different......guess NOT. I'm going to join some of the other folks who have left this forum before me. I'm taking a break. Too many smart ass know nothing's here to suit me.

There was an attempt to restart the electric firing of shells back in the late 70's or early 80's. It failed for a number of reasons I was told. One was concern about possible shell instability with something as simple as static electricity I was told. Another was the firing was so fast, like milli second lock time that there was a problem with recoil being perceived as greater than conventional fired shells. Perhaps it was just an improvement that was not seen as an improvement and few are interested with new when tried and true are cheap and easily sold. After all unless you are looking at a government contract your research has to yield early profits or is quickly abandoned.

I think what Craig is referring to is that Remington attempted the project in the not too distant past. I think in the late 1990's or early 2K's. I had a close friend and guide who has since passed on and he lived on a Reservation in South Dakota. Remington had come out to test some guns and ammunition on prairie dogs and he had guided them. In his loose collection of cartridges he had several of the electric cartridges that had been left behind. My friend said they worked very well, accurate and no misfires. That is all I know. Steve

Whats the alleged advantage supposed to be anyway ? Unbelievably fast lock time is the only one I can come up with. SRH

Remington EtronX was an electric primer system for model 700 rifles.
I understood them to be a settlement stemming from gun control legislation. Not a more accurate, superior ignition system,
There were electric muzzle loaders as well,
As I recall, because they could be made impossible to fire with the turn of a key, they were an acceptable pre-cursor to mandatory gun locks.
Handloaders claim that because of the unique trigger, and instantaneous lock time, the guns possess great accuracy potential.
I was always worried about ammo availability.
All that's fairly recent, but as I am a collector of vintage flashlights and lanterns, I have an interest in early battery designs.
I find it difficult to believe that a cartridge could be reliably fired with early battery technology.
Please post any available drawings from those early patents if possible.
TIA
Out there doing it best I can.
