Might they have generated the charge necessary to fire, and not used batteries at all?

I've seen 1700's air powered repeaters, and they had all the problems one would expect, pre-Viton. But an electrically ignited shotgun? WooHoo!
Piezo would be erratic, and batteries had a very short life, and low voltage outputs, in big cases.
I just gotta see how this was done!

W W Greener Shows pictures of an electric ignited shotgun in "The gun & Its Development". This one use a battery & vibrator coil. He didn't speak very highly of it (Perhaps because it was someone else's invention) & found the "Buzzing" of the coil objectionable. Later electric guns I have seen info on did not use the coil. With the electric system there are a lot less moving parts & those present are not critical. The trigger has only to close a circuit.

Roger Barlow purchased and wrote about his SMFM "Electrique" in the April of 1975 American RIfleman. He bought the gun on a trip to St. Etienne and stated he used it for quail hunting. There is a photo of the breech of the gun, which appears to be a fairly conventional looking boxlock, with the breech balls decorated with thunderbolts.
There is also a photo of the primers the gun used, but, only a paragraph of the article is specific to this gun. According to Roger, only the primers were unique, the hulls were otherwise conventional.
It was a 12 gauge. I wonder what happend to it, and if it gets used for hunting today?

I always thought that the Rem electric priming idea was a good thing for benchrest shooting, no vibration from striker fall, etc. But the primers were expensive, and only available in 1000 packages, so I never tried to convert my target rifle to electric ignition. A fairly simple thing for a guy like me with an EE degree to do--just need to insulate the firing pin from the bolt body, very light spring, and a microswitch for a trigger, strobe circuit from a disposable camera, etc.

There were 7 patents on these electric guns in the 1890's, so I guess some other people thought it was a worthy subject at least 125 yrs ago. With all this political garbage on this web site I thought it would be fun to talk about something different......guess NOT. I'm going to join some of the other folks who have left this forum before me. I'm taking a break. Too many smart ass know nothing's here to suit me. Wow Buzz, that certainly was an angry nasty response to Craig, who was merely stating the obvious. He apparently knew about Remington's recent EtronX failure in the arena of electrically fired guns, and for that, he gets subjected to name calling as bad as you'll find in any political disagreement. However, notice that OWD won't have any problems with your outburst because it is not critical of his politics or Obama. OWD's problems with political threads stem entirely from his own agenda to provide cover to his favored anti-gun politicians. Thanks for proving my point that it isn't just political or 2nd Amendment topics that generate bad blood! Remington EtronX factory loads are no longer made, but primers are still available... but very hard to get... out of stock is the new norm. The mere fact that something gets patented does not mean it was or ever will be successful in the marketplace. Dozens of things get patented for every marketing success. But there have been many drugs patented in recent years that might calm you down a bit.
