Hi Gents. I am new here and hope you all can help. I have my grandmothers old Ithaca SxS I would like to put it back in shooting condition. It appears to be a 20 ga.I put a 20 ga 2-3/4 shell in it seems to fit. I see no serious rust or pitting. The serial number on the receiver and area at end of barrels is 437888.The barrels on the outside and inside seem to be in good shape. The finish on the metal is a patina brown. It does break open and the extractors work. The triggers move. The parts that I see that are missing are the complete forearm, the two screws in front of the trigger guard on the bottom of the receiver, the screw at the rear of the triggerguard, the screw in front of the safety, the safety switch. The butt stock needs to be replaced because of a chunk of wood missing where it meets the receiver on the right side.I am not concerned about refinishing the metal at this time. Now the questions.
1,What model is this?
2,Can it be fired with modern ammo.?
3,Is it worth putting back in shooting condition?
4,Where can I get parts?
5,Where can I get a skematic drawing to show where the parts go?
6,How do I get the old butt stock off?
Gents I know this is a tall order but I can use any help. Thanks,Ed

It is what is referred to as an Ithaca "NID" model, made from 1926 until the very late forties. Ithaca probably put a few together in the early fifties. NID translates to "New Ithaca Double". It is a strong, good quality gun and is worth repairing. The stock can probably be repaired. The replacement would be quite expensive if done by a proper stockmaker. Someone here will suggest a gunsmith with parts available.

Andrew MacFarlane (along with Gunter) can, and has, built these guns from scratch. They both worked for Ithaca Classis Doubles.
Andrew does great stock work also and has the best oil finish you've ever seen.
Both have done work for me and are experts in their field...highly recommended.

I would send it to one of them and have them look at the gun and give you a price to fix it right. They have a better chance of finding any part that you need and making the gun right the first time. It might not seem that it is the cheapest way to go but most likely it is. NID parts are not that easy to come across and any gunsmith that has a stash is not very likely to sell them cheap as they know replacing them is getting harder to do all the time.

Does this gun have major family value? The number of repairs that you list seem to be fairly high. Please do not take this personally but it sounds like you are about to get into a money pit here. Now if the gun is a old family gun it might be worth restoring for family sentimental reasons and money invested is not a major problem. If it is a gun that you came across for a small price hoping to fix her up, for a few dollars, that is another thing. Might be worth owning as a parts gun but as a restored gun the total invested will get real high, real fast.
