My 1940 edition of American Machinist Handbook gives this formula for a rust remover:
Petrolatum 3 ounces P 907 oil 2 ounces Tripoli 6 ounces
"P-907 is made by Vacuum Oil Company(now Exxon Mobil). a similar oil is made by Texas Oil Company known as 'Spinble oil B."
"Tripoli" is defined in Webster's Dictionary as:
"an earth consisting of very friable soft schistose deposits of silica and including diatomite and kieselguhr."
"Steam the two oils together until very warm, and hen add the tripoli. Spread he mixture on he rusted part. Rub off with a cloth after a few moments and the rust should come off with it."
Does anyone know what the current names are for the oil, and sources for he oil ad tipoli
Maybe the current edition has a better fomula?

Maybe the current edition has a better fomula? Unless you're committed to recreating an 80-yr-old formula, naval jelly is available everywhere. Also, Birchwood Casey's Blue Remover (phosphoric acid) works fine, too. Better living through chemistry.

WD40 and 0000 steel wool work just fine for me and doesn't remove whatever blue or other finish there is left on the gun...Geo

go to the grocery store, get a copper scrub pad, lubricate metal, scrub with pad. Try it, really works.
I learn something every day, and a lot of times it's that what I learned the day before was wrong

It matters whether you're trying to get to bare white metal or just want to remove a little rust bloom from a gun barrel with as little effect as possible on the bluing.

To remove small patches of rust 0000 steel wool won't cut, make a scraper out of a cartridge case by hammering the neck flat. After scraping the rust off, finish with WD40 and 0000 wool. The cartridge case is much softer than steel and can't scratch it. Mike

If a gun is heavily rusted plain old malt vinegar will remove rust.

A product called Evapo-Rust works very well for removing rust and bluing. It can be purchased at Harbor Freight and maybe some other places.
The birchwood Casey product works well also.

A variation of the brass case method is the copper tubing/piping one. Use a length long enough to have a comfortable handle, split one end, open with vise or pliers. This creates a spatula-like tool. The end can be contoured to match the barrel curve. This is also effective to clean files, with the edge flat. It works much better than a file card.
I prefer wood to plastic, leather to nylon, waxed cotton to Gore-Tex, and split bamboo to graphite.
