Lloyd, I know exactly what problem you are encountering. I agree with putting the action in a padded vice and using a strap wrench to attempt turning the barrel clockwise. Kroil might be the proper penetrating agent for the barrel threads. 17's are fantastic pumps and deserve TLC. Good luck!

Lloyd that sounds like a good plan.

I have an old M59 Winchester with a Versa-Lite Choke stuck, I tried everything to loosen it up and finally concluded a modified choke was better than a screwed up barrel.

Mr. Wood: You're the second fellow to remind me about the superior penetrating qualities of Kroil, which I had forgotten about. If the No.2 diesel doesn't work, that will be Plan B.

Somebody also suggested PB Blaster as a good penetrating oil to use. Anybody here familiar with that one and how it might compare with Kroil?

I have used PB and Kroil and I could not tell any difference.

I have also used ATF and it seemed to work about as well as Kroil or PB, diesel and kerosene have worked for me also.

I think it has more to do with "soak time" and some how breaking the rust bond with heat or mechanical action than anything else.

Don't get your hands dirty. Put it back together sell it and buy Ithaca 37. Last 20ga I have seen based on features was made in 1950s and in almost unused condition had tag of $399. Newer redesign with parts readily available.

Sometimes this works on rusted threads. gently heat the area of the threads with the propane torch. Apply a small parafin candle to the juncture. The heat will draw the parafin into the threads. I've been told that it flows better than penetrating oil. Plus it's instant, you'll know right away if it worked.

Good luck with that!

Lloyd, remember to open the action, pull the slide back, before you use any force to quarter turn to unthread the barrel.

Chief: Parafin? That's a new one to me. I'll have to see how frustrated I am in two weeks when this action comes out of the diesel.

Mr. Potter: Thank you, I'll have her out of battery, for sure.

Well, kinda. The early model 37 barrels won't interchange like they do on a model 17, and there won't be an interrupter on a model 37 to prevent slam firing unless it was built post 1975-the Remington 17 doesn't slam fire. Most of what was redesigned was done just to keep parts interchange with the model 17 at 0%, so, nothing was improved, some things were simply cheapened, and the 37 got a slab sided look instead of the attractive bosses that a model 17 has.

A model 17 is worth the effort to get it running. They are trim, handy little guns with good shooting dimensions, that always had a 2 3/4" chamber.

I think his hands are already dirty, anyway.

Best,
Ted
