Mr. Newbern, all of those rocks are from the southeast. There are quite a few on that page from north Florida, south Georgia, and south Alabama. I wanted to find out about that gun because I really don't know anything about it. What you have said mirrors what I was told. As told to me one in each gauge was created at the time when some northeastern states were banning the use of rifles for deer hunting. When did Savage acquire Stevens? I was told it was around that time and the reason why the 20 gauge gun wasn't finished. Unfortunately at some point the 16 gauge stock cracked just behind the receiver. I sent it to someone in Texas a couple of years ago.

Gil, I've been called a bunch of things but that might be the first time I've been called "modest". You're too kind.

The bird straps have come from a number of places. I have made some from cow leather, deer hide, and most recently paracord. I've had a few made and given to me by people that know I'm into such things. I have also made some and given them away. In my opinion deer hide or another thin, soft hide is the best leather because it cinches down much tighter than full grain cow leather. The same is true of paracord, it just doesn't look traditional. What it lacks in form it makes up for in function. Only one of my straps was purchased. I got it from Dunn's about twenty-five years ago.

This is my latest creation. I made it last year and call it "The Weekender". The double snaps allow it to be taken apart and a single strap carried on a belt loop or cartridge bag for a day of shooting. It will hold birds for two people for two days.

I used to build and custom wrap fishing rods. I have lots of parachute cord. I can make one of those now that you've shared the picture! Thanks...Geo

Those are simple. They are four strands cut to 30" with a two wrap hangman's noose as the slide. Double the cord over a snap or solid ring and lash the strands together with another short section of cord. I did that setup in nickel but I have also done them with brass hardware. To me the antique brass finish looks much better. The first one below is deer hide, the rest are varying grades of cow leather. Some work better, others make better photo props.

I understand hangman's nooses are no longer politically correct. Maybe I'll just use a square knot...Geo
