The ATF can be helpful in clarifying the antique status of some specific guns. I have seen, for example, an official ATF letter acknowledging the antique status of Chilean Model 95 7x57 rifles manufactured by Ludwig Loewe and so stamped because it is known that Ludwig Loewe was merged into DWM prior to 1899 and that all rifles produced after the merger were stamped DWM, rather than Ludwig Loewe.

Note that the Ludwig Loewe Chilean Model 95 rifles officially acknowledged in writing as antiques by ATF fire standard 7x57 ammunition, still widely available commericially.
